A son is a person in a relationship with his parents. Believers have a relationship with God. These are they who believe in Christ the Savior. They are the sons of God as John 3:16 says, God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, so that whoever believes in him as Savior shall not perish, but have eternal life. Jesus Christ came not to condemn the world but to redeem us from the power of darkness to his glorious light. From the bondage of Satan to his freedom. We have been adopted into the Kingdom of God through Christ Jesus. So we are sons of God.
The relationship that Jesus Christ had with the Father here on earth was great. It was immense, boundless and splendid. He always referred to God as a Father. When the disciples asked him to teach them how to pray he started by saying, “Our Father who art in heaven”. This is who God is to us who believe-a Father.
God yearns for his sons to have a close relationship with him. To fellowship with him. How many of us when we were young loved playing with our fathers? We would run up and down, fall and hurt ourselves but when they carried us in their arms we felt secure. When we cried tirelessly over things, they listened and met our needs.
The relationship between a son and father is so deep, so profound. They share stuff and seek counsel. God desires to relate with us on a son-ship level. We can cry to him, laugh, and share every moment of our lives with him. The Spirit of God testifies that we are children of God. Therefore can confidently call God our Father. As sons of God, we have been justified and are free from the guilt of sin. Therefore we are blameless and in the right relationship with the Father. He knows us deeply; knows our strengths and our flaws and his not ashamed of them.
Who are children of the world?
The children of the world are classified as those who do not seek God’s will in thought, action, and purpose. Their deeds are induced by selfishness. They practice sin separating themselves from God. Their character and moral values are initiated by the devil. For the devil sinned and violated God’s law from the beginning. Cain was a child of the evil one and driven by selfish motives, he murdered his brother Abel because his deeds were righteous unlike his which were evil.
The children of the world are subject to the spirit of slavery leading to the fear of God’s judgment. They walk according to the course of the world. They are held captive by the prince of the air. The spirit that functions in those who are disobedient, who fight against the purposes of God. Who lives in the passions of the flesh and the mind.
Characteristics of sons of God
Sons of God are led by the spirit of God. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are sons of God. Romans 8:14. Everyone born of God does not sin because the seed of God is in him; the essence of his righteous character remains in him. He cannot live a life characterized by sin because he is born of God and longs to please Him. No father wants a rebellious son and the same applies to our heavenly father. He desires for his sons/believers to connect with his heart. To desire the things which please him.
Sons of God share in the spiritual blessing and inheritance. Out of Christ’s superabundance of grace, we have received blessing upon blessing. We are filled with wisdom and grace, the unmerited favor of God. Unlike the children of the world which have no inheritance.
Sons of God obtain help. In our weaknesses, our father sends us a helper who is the Holy Spirit to help in the issues of life. The Father provides counsel to his sons. Those who are of the world that is children of the world seek help from vanity: alcohol, drugs, immorality, etc. But sons of God can easily run to the loving Father. Children of the world run helter-skelter seeking advice and easily fall into the enemy’s hands, they are easily manipulated leaving them frustrated. That is why many end up committing suicide.
Sons of God have God’s protection. He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will remain secure. Psalm 91:1 In the shadow of the Almighty no enemy can withstand. Sons of God are assured of the Father’s protection in life. But the children of the world have no help so when the enemy comes to steal, kill and destroy, they are annihilated.
Sons of God are richly supplied. Philippians 4:19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. A father provides for his children, therefore when we come boldly to the throne of grace as sons of God, he provides what we ask of him. Nevertheless, children of the world have no sustenance, hence beggars’.
Sons of God are Victorious. As sons of God, we have overcome the world, for greater is he that is in us than he that is in the world. Christ dwells in us and us in him because he has given us of his Spirit. 1 John 4:15 whoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwells in him, and he is in him. Through the spirit of God, we have victory over the things of the world and have eternal life. Those of the world, deny Christ hence operating in the spirit of deception. They speak the language of the world and the world pays attention to them and therefore perish.
Sons of God shine like lights in the world. The word of God is much alive in their hearts and spirit that wherever they go it illuminates their path. As sons of God when we abide in him we do not practice sin for we become one with him.
Many, many privileges come with being sons of God. Unlike leaving in bondage as children of the world under the elements of the world. But the grace of God that qualifies all who believe in Christ Jesus is still in operation. Jesus Christ’s arms are wide open for us to surrender our worldly ways and come to him. This is how to become sons of God.
